Origins
In spite of its name, the Chinese crested dog’s origins are in Africa – it was originally called African hairless terrier (African hairless dog exists in literature as a specific race in the last decades of the 20th century). Ancient Aztecs used these dogs, among other things, for keeping their beds warm – they slept with them, since their bodies are surprisingly warm. I also do that although I don’t have anything to do with that ancient people.
Chinese trade ships used to stop along African coast. Chinese mariners chose these dogs as their company on cruises because they were excellent in hunting down stowaways – rats.
So, this race went all the way to the Far East on boats. Smaller dogs lived in homes of noble mandarins as “excellent watch dogs”, while stronger ones even went hunting small game.
The race was renamed in China – became the Chinese crested dog, and kept that name until today.
This unusual race was presented for the first time in 1885 in the United States, but the first kennel club was founded in 1979. In Europe, this race was exhibited for the first time in Munich in 1988.
The Chinese crested dog became more and more popular over the years, being always joyful and in a good mood for company, and this trend goes on until today.
It came to Serbia just a few years ago and there are only about twenty dogs so far. It’s very attractive when you take it for a walk; it brings immense joy into your home, so it will undoubtedly win the hearts of all our dog-lovers.
